Atem

Page history last edited by Marina 1 mo ago

Atem (Draw_A_Card) is from Kazuki Takashi's manga/series Yuugiou. Atem is played by Amiasha.

Age: 18

Birthday: June 4th

Height: 153cm (5'0")

Weight: 42kg (about 93lb)

Blood type: AB

Basic personality

A former Pharaoh, Atem is from Egypt; specifically around 1500BC. Over three-thousand years old in terms of existance, Atem was in his late teens when he died. He spent some time sharing a body with Yuugi in modern day Japan, though he had total amnesia and remembered nothing of his life in Egypt.

Atem is, at most times, a set of contrasts and contradictions. He is confident but easily discouraged, protective but hostile, cold but kind, lonely but independant. His somewhat volatile personality is due to his unusual life, death, and afterlife; he is not always the most stable of people, though for all intents and purposes he manages to do 'sane' well enough.

His temper and tendency to react to most situations with anger cause the largest problems for him and everyone else. He is very quick to anger and once he gets mad, he takes quite some time to cool down. In that time, he tends to make stupid decisions, and he can be quite harsh even towards those he's not actually angry with. He can and does get violent at times, not always even for a good reason, though he tends to use magic rather than become physical.

He is extremely protective of people he considers his friends or those in need of his help. The people he cares most about he can be ridiculously overprotective of, to the point of killing people who he considers a threat to them. Protecting other people is Atem's main motivation for the vast majority of the fighting he does; when he thinks he has lost everyone, he usually gives up. On the other hand, if there is even one person left for him to fight for, he'll do so until he absolutely can't any longer.

Atem is very brave; it's extremely difficult to frighten or intimidate him. He doesn't panic, and is able to keep very focused and level-headed in a dangerous situation. He is easily annoyed by anyone displaying what he sees as cowardice, as it is a trait he greatly dislikes in people. He reacts over-the-top to any insinuation that he is lacking in bravery, and it is generally a touchy subject.

Atem is quite intelligent, though he doesn't always use that intelligence, especially in social situations. In fact, he can be a bit insensitive and cold without meaning to, and is intentionally quite sarcastic at times. He has a liking for arguments and debates, and frequently engages in them for no reason other than his own entertainment. He is a very quick learner, able to master games the first time he plays them, and has even defeated the creator of a game at their own game with no prior knowledge of how to play. Combined with this talent is his ability to quickly figure out and predict an opponent's strategy based on their personality; Atem rarely loses, usually because he can account for an opponent's moves and tailor his to defeat them.

Though he is, for all intents and purposes, very confident in himself, he is also easily discouraged. If he for any reason thinks he can't do whatever it is he needs to be doing, or if he believes the situation is hopeless, he may well freeze or just entirely give up. Similarly, feeling helpless, unable to fix or protect something/someone, or being entirely lost as to what to do in an important situation can all immediately send him into a (usually short-lived) depression.

Official canon

Note: Yuugiou was a long series and therefore I've given a very condensed summary.

Atem was originally known only a nameless, amnesiac spirit that appeared when the Sennen Puzzle (a golden pyramid 3-D puzzle object) was put together by a boy named Yuugi. From then on, they shared the same body, as they went around playing card games (and some other games) in the name of justice! Along the way, they discovered Atem was the dead spirit of a 'Nameless Pharaoh' who lived about three-thousand years earlier.

Many long arcs battles later, they had collected all seven of the Sennen Items, along with three 'god cards', and presented them to a stone tablet that held inscriptions about Atem's past. From there, they went into an odd roleplaying game/reinactment of Atem's life in Egypt, finally ending with the discovery of Atem's name and recovery of his memories, and the destruction of the dark god, Zork.

Afterwards, having accomplished all he was still to do, Atem had one task left; lose a duel to someone better than him. He faced off against his friend Yuugi (after some magical intervention split them into two people), and was defeated. He walked through the door to the afterlife... And ended up somewhere very different, obviously. (In the actual series, the show ends soon after his departure.)

Head canon (stuff I made up)

Notes on Magic Use in Yuugiou

Magic in Yuugiou is poorly explained and requires a lot of guesswork on how it's used. It's very unclear as to what kinds of magic can be used only by people holding Sennen Items. Because most of the magic-users also hold Sennen Items, it's difficult to see which are afforded by the Items and which are used by innate magical ability.

The best (and possibly only, if I remember right) example of a magic-user who does NOT have an Item is Mana. She is able to cast a variety of spells and summon her monsters without holding an Item. However, she is also in training as a magician, and it's unknown if this means she is in a different class than the others.

Made a little more confusing is the fact that magic obviously existed before the creation of the Items, since said Items were created through a spell. Also, the caster of the spell (Ankhunadin, a priest) was not a 'magician' in the Yuugiou sense of the word, though he later did end up holdng one of the Sennen Items. Similarly confusing, it is canon that you don't need to be a magic-user to summon your 'spirit monster', or kaa. Kisara summons her own monster, the Blue Eyes White Dragon, with no magical training.

It is generally assumed by the fandom as a whole that the priests and Pharaoh (and random other people, such as Mana) have their own magic that does not come from the Items due to there being no clear evidence against it.

Atem's own magic abilities include:

Mind Crush - Destroys higher brain function and leaves the victim an a comatose state, or dead.

Summoning - Ability to summon his own personal kaa monster and ability to summon monsters from cards.

Spellcasting - Presumably the ability to cast spells from a spellbook should the need/opportunity arrise.

He has also demonstrated the ability to use his magic in other, more undefined ways, such as somehow sealing away the dark god Zork, though that required the loss of his life (and Bakura's as well.)

Atem has a few unusual abilities not directly related to magic, mostly being clairvoyance (though it's a strange case) and telepathy. He appears to use the clairvoyance many times to predict cards, or know which card he has drawn without looking at it, by getting a 'sense' for it usually by touching it. This happens in one instance when he touches the next card in his deck to draw it and correctly calls it as Osiris, and another in which he draws and plays Devil's Sanctuary without looking at it. However, in the one of the last episodes of the series, it is explained that rather and sensing and predicting cards, Atem actually wills them to appear, though he seems to do it unknowingly (believing his general luck and faith in his deck is the cause, rather than anything done by him.)

His telepathy is very limited, and can be used only in an emergency or urgent situation. It must also be used only with someone he is very close to emotionally, and he has to be touching them. He demonstrated this particular ability during a fire; managing to speak with Jounouchi telepathically in order to give him instructions on how to save everyone.

He has various skills that were regained along with his memories from his time as Pharaoh, such as swordfighting, archery, swimming and things such as diplomacy, trade, and politics. He also now reads, writes, and speaks Japanese and Ancient Egyptian, both of which are his native languages; he can decipher small amounts of related scripts of Ancient Greek, Sanskrit, and the like, though he's not good at it. He knows only a few words of English, and they're almost all useless for conversation.

Because Atem's kaa is never revealed (he summons all monsters from cards/tablets) I've used one of the fanon choices, the Magician of Black Chaos. He is a fanon favorite choice for many reasons: He is similar to The Black Magician (who can't be used, as he is a fusion of Mahaado's kaa and Mahaado himself), he's a powerful monster, and he is often shown as sort of an extension of Atem (they often fade into each other between shots; they have the same facial features, same hands, etc.)

Atem, for awhile, was unable to summon his kaa. He regained the ability after making up his mind about what he was going to do. As the ability to summon, and the strength of a kaa are dependant on the summoner's desire to fight to live, he lost the ability while undecided about what to do with the pseudo-life he has now. As he's decided to do everything he can to live for now, the ability to summon his kaa returned. He discovered his kaa's ability by accident: he can stop the effects of certain spells, with major limitations, including the fact that it can only be used once every few days at the very most. He's only bothered using it once and wasn't entirely sure how he did it anyway.

Used to sleeping much of the time while sharing a body with Yuugi, except during a tournament (where he tends to swap with Yuugi anyway after the matches/when he's exhausted), Atem drinks a lot of coffee to stay focused on anything he's not particularly interested in. He's mostly nocturnal; he usually falls asleep around 6:00AM and wakes up in the early afternoon, which allows him to avoid being kept awake by the noise in the boys' dorm during the night. He doesn't sleep particularly well, and this contributes to his need for more rest.

Atem is not fond of sweets, though he will partake in them in limited doses. He also, amusingly enough, does not like tea despite the fact that it was a very common drink in his time. He has a very low alcohol tolerance and just gets extremely sick when he drinks. He's decided it's a bad idea to drink and won't be doing so in the future (at least not intentionally). He managed to drink some wine without making himself sick, and so therefore might have some in the future in small amounts.

He doesn't like to be touched, grabbed, pulled, hugged, or anything else that requires physical contact. This is less strict for people he really likes, but otherwise he's very easily annoyed by it. He's especially annoyed that people seem to think pulling his hair or otherwise messing with it is, for some reason, okay. He's beginning to get used to it from some people at Moksa, though he still doesn't appreciate it.

Atem finds snowmen creepy, because ghjlkfgdasj they ARE.

Though it is usually hidden from view under his shirt, Atem is almost always wearing a silver cartouche pendant, on which his name is inscribed in hieroglyphics:

Atem has spoken to a variety of people at Moksa, though he hasn't met everyone yet.

Linali - He and Linali are very close, and are officially a couple now. They spend a great deal of time together, usually doing something useless.

Yuugi - Sort of a combination of a twin brother and best friend, Atem and Yuugi are very close. Still not quite accustomed to being around each other but in seperate bodies, they are more or less inseperable at the moment.

Tsuzuki - As much as Tsuz annoys him at times, Atem really does like him and considers him his closest friend on the island aside from Linali and Yuugi. Neither should ever be allowed near a kitchen, let alone allowed near a kitchen together.

Frau - They bounce dramatically from mortal enemies to almost friends. Despite not getting along at all much of the time, they actually know a great deal about each other, and seem to have enough respect for each other to not share anything they shouldn't about the other with anyone else. Atem, not used to not being taken seriously, is easily provoked by Frau but also finds it entertaining to mess with the bishop in return. They're both have more in common than they like to realize.

Gray - Varies from almost friendly to extreme annoyance, depending on the situation. Atem didn't appreciate getting completely pummelled in the sparring match he didn't really want to be in in the first place. Most of the time they seem to get along fine, though.

Mikuru - After an unfortunate event that involved Mikuru being turned into a zombie and Atem accidentally breaking her nose to protect Linali, she's been afraid of him. He actually feels pretty bad about it and does his best to be less frightening than usual around her, though he's usually not all that successful. He recently pretended to be Yuugi in order to show her he wasn't dangerous, which was met with some success.

Eiji - Atem find him annoying and childish.

Undertaker - Atem considers him somewhat morbidly amusing, but he's a little miffed with him for getting involved in a fight that, in Atem's opinion, was none of his business.

Dartz - They hate each other. Dartz is one of the few people Atem is actually unsettled by, if not honestly afraid of.

Orlando - They haven't gotten to know each other much, but both know the other is in generally the same situation regarding their previous deaths. Atem has promised to attempt to help Orlando if he figures out a way around the whole mortality thing.

Hakkai - They get along most of the time, though they don't know each other particularly well despite both taking part in multiple cave rescues. Atem knows Hakkai is a youkai.

Conan - Atem is a bit annoyed with him for pulling the April 1st voice post prank, but otherwise hasn't spoken to him much. He doesn't have any suspicion that Conan's older than he seems, as Atem's used to very strange and/or overly mature children.

Riku - Atem doesn't know Riku well as anything other than Linali's friend, but he does try to be friendly towards her.

Tsukuyomi - Atem really wants to kill her, little girl or not. He doesn't appreciate her throwing a sword at him or stealing and running off with Yuugi, kthx.

After speaking with Yuuko and getting his options for what he can do upon leaving Moksa, Atem is, right now, not intending to leave the island any time soon. He has little interest in most of the classes, and so is not taking any; he occupies most of his time by reading in the library. Though he's coming to accept that he really is dead, and will never have a chance at a normal life again, he can't yet let go of the closest thing he has.

Yuugi's arrival on the island has greatly shifted Atem's attitude about the entire ordeal; he is just happy to see Yuugi again, but in the back of his mind he knows it won't last, just as his time with Linali won't either. So, Atem has been spending a great deal of time attempting to discover a magical means of getting what he wants; another chance at life, and the ability to somehow stay with both Yuugi and Linali.

Atem has found out the hard way that any of his more powerful (or destructive) magic doesn't work at all, and instead causes him to feel weak and aquire a bad migraine.

After finding out that Linali's Innocence is slowly draining her lifespan, Atem decided he had to find some way to stop it. He spoke with Yuuko, asking the price in return for accomplishing that goal, and was told it would be his kaa. Torn between his need to save Linali and the great sacrifice of giving up a part of his soul and likely his chance at ever reaching an afterlife, Atem took awhile to decide what to do, eventually settling on not taking the deal after Yuugi convinced him not to.

Together, he and Yuugi made the somewhat poor decision to go into the caves in an attempt to help Yuugi summon his kaa. Of course, they managed to get into more than they'd bargained for; Yuugi did manage to summon his kaa, though Atem ended up breaking his leg in a fall. Linali came to help the two, and Yuugi ended up rescuing her as well; eventually the three made it out and a good time was had by all. Not used to taking medication, especially medication as strong as the kind Hakkai provided him with, Atem is a little bit overly talkative and friendly at the moment as a side effect. It'll wear off as soon as he gets accustomed to it.

After an incident with Frau and some hair dye, Atem's hair ended up being dyed grey. Considering the ridiculous way Atem's hair grows, he decided to cut it all off, dye it black, and then wait for the natural color to come back in. His hair is now a little longer than chin length, black at the ends and red or gold at the roots. He's wearing it in a ponytail much of the time.

Finally striking a deal that was acceptable, Atem traded the three God Cards to Yuuko for removing the drain Linali's Innocence puts on her life span.

Atem is now attending the same classes as Yuugi: Home Economics, Anatomy, Magic Theory, and World Religions. He's also attending Chemistry.
