Jounouchi Katsuya (luckoftheduel) is from Kazuki Takahashi's Yuugiou: Duel Monsters.

Jounouchi is played by Clara.

Official canon

Jounouchi makes his first appearance in YGO as a bully. Which is a great start for someone who eventually becomes the main character's best friend. It is this same character that Jounouchi is responsible for bullying for some time. However, when an even bigger bully threatens Yuugi, Jounouchi's good-hearted nature gets the best of him and he comes to Yuugi's rescue. He also goes out of his way to save a piece of Yuugi's Millennium Puzzle -- admittedly it is a piece that he put in peril in the first place -- without which there would be pretty much no YGO. After this, the two begin to form a tight bond.

Jounouchi follows Yuugi (along with Anzu and Honda and occasionally others) into pretty much every crazy adventure and/or major card game tournament that presents itself over the course of the series. Initially, he doesn't know much about Duel Monsters and starts out as a rank amateur who can't win mock duels against his friends. He commits to intense practice and, after throwing himself headlong into an international tournament, shows serious improvement. He plays a lot of card games (no lie) and eventually garners the respect of much more senior duelists. In subsequent series, he is listed as the third best duelist of all time -- right behind Yuugi and Seto Kaiba.

Jounouchi's life before meeting Yuugi is not a particularly happy story. His parents divorced when Jounouchi was ten and after moving away from his mother and sister, Jounouchi became caught up in trying to repay his father's extensive gambling debts. He takes on a part-time job and enters a high-stakes game show in order to earn money for this purpose. Later on in the series he is again found 'gambling' on his own skill to earn money, this time in a Duel Monsters tournament ('Duelist Kingdom' sponsored by multi-billionaire card developer Pegasus) for the purpose of paying for an operation for his sister, who has a degenerative eye disease and is slowly going blind. He duels his way to the finals of this tournament, but eventually forfeits his final duel to Yuugi. Afterward, Yuugi turns over the card that rewards its holder with the tournament's prize money to Jounouchi. After this, Jounouchi's place as Yuugi's 'second' is pretty much set in stone and he remains an important part of the series from this point onward.

- Personality -

Jounouchi is intensely loyal and stubborn to a fault. Due to his sometimes loud-mouthed behavior and the aforementioned tendency toward extreme displays of loyalty, he is frequently compared to a dog. It's not a terrible comparison, except it tends to cause people to exclude other character traits, like his fierce independence and pride. He can be a bit rough around the edges, possibly a hold-over from his time spent involved in gang activity and the aforementioned tendency to bully. You don't have to dig too far to find a totally different person inside however, someone who is willing to make just about any sacrifice necessary to save a friend.

Not exactly a personality trait, but nevertheless worth a mention is Jounouchi's skill when it comes to luck-based activities. Most of the cards in his Duel Monsters deck contribute to a larger luck-based/gambling strategy. Ironic, considering the amount of effort he made when he was younger to try and get his father to stop gambling. Multiple people have commented on his affinity for activities that involve luck, including Yuugi's 'alter-ego' -- the spirit living in the Millennium Puzzle.

Jounouchi has a very clear-cut opinion of 'friends' and 'enemies'. You're either one or the other and if you're the other, you'd better watch your back. He may be reformed, but he isn't above giving it his all to take you down -- especially if you're a threat to his friends. In a distinct 'other' category is the charming Kujaku Mai. It's pretty strongly hinted that Jounouchi thinks of her as more than a friend, but for a kid like him, that's some pretty confusing territory right now.

Head canon (stuff I made up)

 ... He doesn't have a Brooklyn accent.

Additionally, he's pretty much unaware of your physical space, should you happen to be someone he regards fondly. He's very much into hugging, tossing his arm around your shoulders, ruffling your hair, that kind of thing.

Game canon (stuff that has happened in the game)

Relationships

Yuugi: Yuugi is Jounouchi's bff. They are closer than brothers, but now they have to fight each other. /lame song lyric reference

No, seriously, Yuugi's the person Jou is closest to, you could say. If anyone matches that closeness, it's the other Yuugi. Jounouchi is incredibly affectionate towards his friend, though he's not immune to Jou's occasional teases. They're also card game nerds to the max. Jounouchi would stick his neck out anywhere for Yuugi. Right now he feels a bit guilty though, because after Atem left, they spent some time apart and Jou feels like he's been a bad friend to Yuugi.

Atem: Yuugi's other self, also a pharaoh of Egypt. Jounouchi may've had some trouble processing that at one point, as well as when he arrived on the island to find Atem a) returned and b) in a body separate from Yuugi. Still, his admiration and respect for Atem are pretty much through the roof. They're very close.

Linali: Atem's girlfriend. That says a lot right there. But also, a girl! Jou isn't always terribly smooth around girls. He gets a bit flustered sometimes. Still, he thinks she's super sweet and nice and that she and Atem are a great couple. He just won't admit that aloud.

Mai: Okay, Jou might have the teensiest crush on Mai. Just a little. /blush

Yami no Malik: Serious dislike here. The guy tried to destroy pretty much everything Jounouchi held dear and now he's on the island and he might be trying to do it again. Probably is. ... He's also Jounouchi's roommate. Thankfully, Jou lives in Atem and Yuugi's room for the most part.
