Kaito Kuroba aka Kaitou Kid (aceupthesleeve) is from Gosho Aoyama's manga series Magic Kaito (which came before Detective Conan).
Kaito is played by Styx.
Official canon
Name: Kaito Kuroba
Age: 18
Height: 5'8" (174 cm)
Weight: 128 lbs (58.4 kg)
Body Type: He has the body of an athlete, of course. Toned, slim and definitely in shape.
Hair: Brown and spiky, he can't be bothered to flatten it
Eyes: Blue
Clothing Style: Casual. When he’s not in his school uniform, he’s usually wearing jeans, a T-shirt and an old jacket. His Kaitou Kid uniform consists of the flashy white suit and silk hat, of course, topped off with a monocle that shouldn’t be able to hide his identity but does for some reason.
Speaking Style: He tends to refer to people by their last names unless he’s really close to them. Otherwise, there isn't anything extraordinary about it.
Demeanor: Kaito is your everyday class clown with a brain. He loves pulling harmless, magical pranks on his fellow classmates (especially Aoko) to garner a few laughs, and can often be seen teasing his closest friends. He tends to be blunt and sarcastic simply because he isn’t the type of person to beat around the bush. He’s rather charming and quite popular with the girls of his class, but is oblivious to their admiration (despite the fact that he has been caught picking the locks to the ladies’ locker room). He can be a bit overconfident at times, but most of it is in jest. He's also kind of a pervert (although all blunt mentions of sex tend to make him blush like no tomorrow). Despite his misgivings, he’s really a nice guy. It’s not hard to hold a conversation with him, since he’s always willing to meet new people, and he’s not so stupid as to make jokes at inappropriate times. And if you’re feeling down, you can guarantee that Kaito will be there to cheer you up and help you through your problems. Heart and smile are the most important things, after all (a lesson from his father that he embraces wholeheartedly).
As Kid, Kaito adopts a more mysterious demeanor. He likes to speak in riddles and double meanings (mostly to protect his identity) and it’s quite obvious he has a flair for the dramatics. He’s quite the flirt when it comes to women as well, but that’s merely because he has a reputation to uphold (although I’m sure he doesn’t mind the attention he receives from the ladies~) He can be philosophical and poetic at times, especially when he’s working to help other people. He may taunt the police officers and detectives who attempt to catch him, but it’s important to note that he does respect them (he just doesn’t show it… often).
Job: Student/magician by day, internationally wanted criminal by night. The Arsène Lupin of the Heisei era, if you will
Best Qualities: His humor, skills as a magician, and intelligence are some of his greatest assets. He’s also a kind person (despite the sarcasm) and often goes out of his way to help others when they need it. He even takes the necessary precautions to ensure that no one gets hurt during his heists. Despite the fact that he’s a criminal, the villains he goes against are almost always worse than he is. He’s a seeker of justice, even if he gets it through less than legal means.
Worst Qualities: He’s terribly blunt to the point of rudeness (if he thinks something is stupid, he has no problem saying so) and sometimes he may cross the line when it comes to teasing others. He may be intelligent, but he can be rash and impulsive, and this quality has almost gotten him captured (or even shot) quite a few times. He can also be just a bit overconfident, especially when it comes to heists (another quality that has almost ended his career as Kaitou Kid).
Weaknesses: If anything is going to be his downfall as Kid, it’s going to be his overconfidence and impulsiveness. So far, he’s gotten lucky (he’s smart enough to slip out of any tight situation) but luck can only take a thief so far.
Hobbies: Any and all things dealing with magic, thievery and jewels of course.
Talents: Obviously, he’s an incredibly skilled magician (best in the world, he likes to claim). He’s very good at disguising himself, and can even imitate anyone’s voice perfectly without the aid of a voice changer. He’s also pretty good at producing convincing replicas of real jewels, and keeping a sturdy ‘poker face’ even in the grimmest of situations.
Biography: To understand Kaito’s history and motives, one must go all the way back to the young boy’s father—Toichi Kuroba. Toichi was a skilled magician with a double life: world-famous performer by day, infamous Kaitou Kid by night. For nearly ten years Kid stole jewel after jewel, somehow managing to magically evade the clutches of the police. Toichi’s stunts as Kid attracted the attention of a mysterious crime syndicate, who then contracted him to steal the infamous Pandora gem. Toichi initially agreed—after all, he was a phantom thief and they were paying him handsomely. Unbeknownst to Toichi, however, there was something unique about this jewel—a quality that made it one of the most desired gems in the world. During the passing of a particular comet, Pandora was said to ooze liquid ‘tears’ that would grant immortality to anyone who consumed them. Once Toichi realized just who he was dealing with (a dangerous criminal organization seeking immortality) he cancelled the deal and refused to steal the gem. He was later murdered during a magic show when Kaito was only nine, and his death was framed as an accident. With Toichi’s death, Kaitou Kid disappeared.
Eight years passed, and Kaito remained blissfully ignorant of his father’s secret identity. He took the skills in magic and disguise he learned from his old man and perfected them, becoming one of Japan’s most talented young magicians. It seemed like Kaito’s life was going to be nothing but ordinary, until one day, out of the blue, Kaitou Kid reappeared. At first Kaito didn’t think anything of it. After all, he had no connection to Kid. At least, that’s what he thought, until he accidentally leaned against his dad’s portrait, stumbled into a secret room, and discovered the gadgets and costumes Toichi had utilized as Kid. Confused, Kaito donned the flashy white suit, silk hat, and monocle himself and went out to expose the secret behind his father’s midnight career.
The Kaitou Kid who had returned was a phony. Underneath the mask was an older man named Jii (whom Kaito calls Jiichan). Jii was Toichi’s assistant back when he was alive, both on the stage and as Kid. After some pressing, Jii told Kaito about the circumstances surrounding his father’s death, including the part where Toichi was an internationally wanted thief. The news seemed to strike Kaito hard (especially the part about his father being murdered) but the young teen managed to bounce back rather quickly. Knowing very well he couldn’t go to the police with this information (he had just committed a felony, they’d never believe him) Kaito vowed to become the new Kid and draw out his father’s murderers and make them pay for murdering his father. Thus, Kaitou Kid returned from the grave in the form of a young high school magician.
A few high profile heists later, Kaito was confronted by the criminal organization that killed his father. Although they were none the wiser about Kaito’s identity, they still attempted to take the young boy’s life. Kaito managed to escape unscathed, and was even lucky enough to learn some new information—information about Pandora. It seemed like the organization was still searching for the elusive gem, and Kaito wasn’t going to let them have it. He was going to find the gem before the syndicate—and destroy it.
Head canon (stuff I made up)
- His mother's name is Aya Kuroba, and she works as a nurse at the local Ekoda hospital
- Chocolate ice cream is his favorite dessert. He’s also fond of Aoko’s cookies and his mother’s cake.
- Every single gadget that Kaito utilizes for his heists (card gun, hang glider, sleeping gas, flash bombs, etc) was personally constructed by him, with the help of his assistant Jii-chan. He's good with his hands, and this skill extends not only to gadget, but to electronic devices as well. He can totally program your VCR. Totally.
- Kaito is decent with computers, a skill he forced himself to learn in order to make breaking through security systems easier. He can hack into most things and has enough knowledge to protect his identity via the internet. However, he’s no computer genius, and he can’t write programs or even touch the heavier locks. He has his limits.
- Kaito has mixed feelings about his career as Kaitou Kid. One one hand, he loves it. He's an adrenaline junkie through and through, and the rush of a heist is more than enough to get his blood pumping. He treats his alter ego as almost a hobby and puts a lot of time and effort into it. He's not even 100% sure that he'll actually quit heisting when he finds Pandora, although he constantly says he will. On the other hand, he realizes that his thieving ways are wrong. When people call him the 'modern day Robin Hood,' he's always quick to dismiss these claims and say that he is, through and through, the bad guy. He doesn't like lying to Inspector Nakamori and Aoko. He realizes that Kid should have died eight years ago, and that he's merely a shadow of his father's phantom. It's a paradox-- he's caught between loving and hating his alter ego.
- Kaito is a huge video game fan. He's such a Nintendo fanboy.
- Kaito’s poker face has always, always been a mischievous and somewhat impish grin, both as Kaito and as Kid. It’s what he wears 24/7, and he never lets it completely slip under any circumstances (tiny slips in the face of close friends are common). Because of this, very few people have actually seen Kaito-- in all of his anger, hurt, guilt, desperation and fear. It’s almost as if by keeping Poker Face, he’s holding on to the last pieces of his father’s memory, and by doing this he’s shutting out everyone around him in the process. It isn’t something he does consciously. On the contrary, he would be mortified if he knew exactly how much he was distancing himself from those he cares about most. Because of this, it’s incredibly difficult for someone to get really close to Kaito. It may be easy to become a close friend, but very few people actually manage to bypass the mask and see exactly how vulnerable the boy really is.
- Despite his skirt flipping, lady’s locker room picking, peeking on Aoko while she’s bathing ways, Kaito has never had a serious relationship (despite a few short and rather chaste flings in middle school) and is about as clueless as they come in that department. He has a tendency to flirt with girls harmlessly and not realize that they might be crushing on him.
- He only steals jewels, and that's that. He may make an exception here or there, but for the most part? It's only precious stones.
- As far as father figures are concerned, Kaito has two (other than his real father): Jii-chan and Inspector Nakamori. Nakamori for his civilian life, and Jii-chan for his criminal one. He respects the two men more than anyone else he knows.
- He's kind of a control freak, but he masks this fact well by operating in insanity. Nobody knows exactly how much work he puts into planning his heists, his magic effects, and his tricks. He plans just enough chaos into everything he does so no one can tell how carefully calculated his moves are. He's good at improvising (heck, a kaitou has to be) but he doesn't like it when he has too. Unfortunately, bring Conan to a heist and he'll be improvising out the ear. Conan is the only one who can see through his illusions so thoroughly.
Game Relationships
- Aoko Nakamori: Best friend. Kaito's best friend since age six. They met at Ekoda's clock tower, where Aoko was waiting for her father. However, he never seemed to show up because he was busy at work. Kaito cheered her up by doing a simple magic trick, and they've been best friends ever since. Kaito actually has a huge crush on Aoko, but it's something he hasn't realized himself yet due to his generally clueless nature.
- Conan Edogawa: Rival. Public enemy number one, Conan is one of the detectives who chases Kaito's alter ego Kaitou Kid back in Japan. He's also the only detective who actually manages to foil Kaito's heists. Kaito doesn't like him very much becaues of this, but he respects Conan for his intellect and enjoys teasing the shrunken detective. Conan suspects Kaito is Kid, but Kaito refuses to give him evidence to prove his theory.
- Heiji Hattori: Acquaintance/Rival. Another detective from back home. This one hasn't encountered Kaito's alter ego much, and so his opinions on this detective are rather neutral.
- Frau: Mild enemy and favorite prank victim. Kaito accidentally stumbled on Frau's porn collection while browsing the library. Frau considers him a young padawan when it comes to pornography and perversion now, and calls Kaito 'Lassie' instead of his real name. Frau always teases Kaito and generally gets on his nerves, so Kaito's opninon of Frau isn't very high. He's always willing to tease and prank him in revenge though, of course. Frau and Kaito started the water condom fight that flooded the boys dorms.
- Risa Harada: Friend. She offered to be one of Kaito's assistants durings his magic show. He thinks she's adorable, and so far she's the only one other than Aoko who's managed to make him blush.
- Riku Harada: Acquaintance. The other Harada twin. They've spoken on a few occasions, and Kaito thinks she's nice.
- Kairi: Acquaintance. They've talked a few times and he helped cheer her up when she was feeling lonely.
- The Undertaker: Acquaintance/Creepy guy. He generally creeps Kaito out, so the magician has a tendency to avoid him.
- Mikuru Asahina: Friend. They've talked on several occasions, and Kaito considers her a friend. She tends to blush and flail a lot around him.
- Eiji Kikumaru: Acquaintance. They built a giant fort together with Tsuzuki!
- Tsuzuki Asato: Friend. He was one of the first people Kaito met when he arrived on campus. They also built the book fort in the library together with Eiji. He had a run in with one of Tsuzuki's shikis, Byakko, who asked Kaito to watch over Tsuzuki.
- C.C.: Friend (?). Calls her See-See, just because.
- Ran Mouri: Acquaintance/Rival's girlfriend. He likes her, even though they haven't talked much. She seems nice. And yes, he will hit on her just to make Conan angry.
- Eisuke Hondou: Acquaintance. Helped him out when he first arrived and talks to him sometimes
- Saguru Hakuba: Rival. Annoying detective that Kaito likes to make fun of.
- Akako Koizumi: Friend (?). A witch who keep trying to make him fall in love with her.
