Basic personality

Mai Kujaku is a lot of woman, for sure. She is in her early early twenties, and very self-suffiant; she takes care of herself, with no need to get help from anyone else, thank you. Currently, she makes a living by entering Duel Monsters tournaments professionally, and she seems to be well-off enough as she owns nice clothes and a convertable, and has enough money to travel both for work and pleasure. In the past, she has worked as a card dealer on a casino boat.

Though she may come across at first as shallow, money-obsessed, and stuck-up, there is more to her than that. Over her time with her friends, she's come to value other people as much or more than herself, and she is a good friends to those she cares about. She has a soft spot for goofballs, and for girls who seem in need of advice and some self-confidence. She has a lot of life experience, and is willing to lend a hand and her knowledge to anyone who needs it.

She is very prideful, however, and anything that damages that pride is either a cause for anger or great loss of confidence. She is also prone to making stupid decisions based on her pride, including her choice to join Dartz at one point just to prove she was still strong after her ordeal during Battle City's finals.

Though willing to throw herself into situations that are over her head in order to protect people she cares for, Mai has no magical or supernatural powers to help her; she relies only on her knowledge, experience, and other skills to get through any opposition. She is, contrary to her appearance, no ditz and in fact is very good at strategy and planning. She's also manipulative at times, especially towards men, who she often uses for her own gain and nothing more. However, she has two love interests in her own world: Jounouchi and Varon, and is still undecided between the two.

Official canon

Mai is a side-character in Yuugiou, who often shows up during important events but is not a part of the main heroic group. She is usually encountered during tournaments; she was introduced in Duelist Kingdom as one of the early opponents, facing off against Jounouchi and serving as a cause for character development for him. She returns a few episodes later in a more neutral encounter, providing shelter and food for the main group who had planned very poorly for the 3-day tournament.

She is seen various other times through Duelist Kingdom, as the group rescues her from a player killer, she arrives to provide help in getting Yuugi into the finals, and duels as part of the finals herself. She isn't seen again until Battle City, where she plays a more important role in everything from dueling, to rescuing Jounouchi's sister Shizuka and friend Ryuuji from Rare Hunters, to providing a ride in her clown car convertable for everyone to get to the semi-finals on time.

During the semi-finals, Mai's involvement gets more serious. She faces against the recently-revealed split personality of Malik's, Yami no Malik, and loses during a dark game in which her memories of her friends are lost every time she loses a monster. Her mind is trapped in a penalty game as a result of the loss of the duel, and her memories begin fading away entirely while her body remained in a coma. After the defeat of Yami no Malik, she wakes up, all effects of his penalty game reversed.

Though she seemed okay, she was not seen again until a short time later during the Doma arc, where to the surprise of the group she had joined Dartz and become one of his motorcycle-riding henchmen. Trying to prove herself after her loss to Yami no Malik, she feels strong and important as part of the Doma group, and accompanies them on their missions. She shares a tense relationship with Varon during this time, as he is obviously enarmoured with her to the point of jumping from a balcony to protect her, but she doesn't share his feelings until later. After taking Jounouchi's soul during a duel with him, her own soul is lost to Raphael, and she is rescued with the others after the defeat of Leviathan, at which time she says she is leaving until she can face herself and Jounouchi again.

During the epilogue of Yuugiou we see Mai a final time, dueling as a team with another female duelist, Vivian, upon the Great Wall of China.

Head canon (stuff I made up)

Mai is out jogging one day, and encounters a strange-looking bunny, which proceeds to expand in size and swallow her whole. She then arrives at Moksa, much to her annoyance.

Mai brought her deck with her to the island, as she is always carrying it. Her deck is a modified version of her Battle City deck, with mostly her Harpy Ladies and Amazoness cards.

In addition to purple, Mai loves green, and most of her clothes are in purple, green, white, and black.

Game canon (stuff that has happened in the game)

Mai is actually enjoying her time at Moksa, as much of a surprise to herself as it is. She has been involved in some of the events, though she mainly just spends time with her new friends. Her closest friend on the island right now is Miranda, though Mai is really worried about Miranda's relationship with Dartz. Mai is also close to Linali, and she very much likes the twins (Risa and Riku.) She gets along with almost everyone, with the exception of Dartz. She only spoke to Axel a few times, but she was saddened to hear of his death.
