Official canon
(Warning: This section will contain spoilers for Code Geass R2 and related picture dramas, as well as references to other character information and light novels. Proceed with caution!)
Rolo's background is very sketchy. We know that he was a child assassin and that he was assigned by the government to be a part of the team that monitored Lelouch during the year that he spent without his memories of having the Geass and leading the Black Knights as 'Zero'. Up until this point, we have next to no detail about his past -- save a few brief flashbacks showing him summarily executing multiple people and a brief appearance in one of the Code Geass video games. His first appearance is as Lelouch's younger brother, a role he was given when Lelouch's memories were wiped.
He replaces Lelouch's biological sister, Nunnally, in all of Lelouch's memories. Additionally, all pictorial evidence of Nunnally is altered to include Rolo instead. Ironically, he also bears a striking physical resemblance to the girl, and in addition, also possesses a Geass -- like Lelouch. Rolo is initially mindful only of his mission, since he's never had a family, the concept of personal ties is foreign to him. However, when Lelouch acknowledges Rolo as his brother -- a ploy to get the powerful Geass-user on his side -- Rolo becomes almost obsessively devoted to him.
Throughout the series, Rolo is one of Lelouch's only constant allies, even though his 'brother' is known by the audience to be putting on an elaborate act to placate the emotionally fragile young man for most of that time. When all Lelouch's other allies betray him, Rolo alone stands by his side -- at the ultimate cost of his own life. This act of sacrifice causes Lelouch to realize what a mistake he's made in taking advantage of Rolo and he properly acknowledges him as his true brother.
Rolo, regardless of the side he chooses, is a more than capable pilot and his Knightmare Frame, Vincent, proves to be a powerful weapon on multiple occasions. Featuring prominently among Rolo's physical possessions is a cellphone charm in the shape of a heart, originally intended as a birthday gift for Nunnally. Rolo was given the charm, which also functions as a locket and music box, instead, and after he joins Lelouch's rebellion, he treasures the item deeply.

Rolo, as previously mentioned, possesses a Geass. His Geass allows him to halt people's perceptions of space-time. In other words, he can 'freeze' people in a second, but not objects. If someone were running toward him with a knife, he would be able to escape. If someone fired a bullet at him, he would not. Using his Geass puts a strain on his heart, however, so he isn't inclined to using it excessively. As an assassin, he is also skilled in multiple types of weaponry -- handguns and knives, though there is some evidence that he also makes use of poison, being his primary weapons of choice. He is essentially totally ruthless and has killed people with very little provocation. When he arrives on the island, however, it will be after Lelouch has 'acknowledged' him and Rolo has joined the Black Knights. He no longer has such a murderous personality and will generally only perform those types of extreme actions when asked or ordered by Lelouch specifically.
Rolo is extremely attached to Lelouch and without him around will likely be a nervous wreck. He's highly emotional and somewhat unstable, though you might also get the impression that he's just what he appears to be: an injured and secretly kind young man. His affection for his brother is his primary motivation at this point and he will be eager to return to Lelouch as soon as possible. When he learns that he needs to glean some piece of important knowledge from this experience in order to return, he will most likely take it very seriously. He's not terribly social, so he'll probably have a hard time sharing a room, but he's also a skilled soldier. The art of lying and subterfuge is not beyond him in the slightest. His facade of choice is an agreeable, yet incredibly meek, model student. Still, there's something unsettling about it and it's hard to say whether or not it will attract or deflect people.
Head canon (stuff I made up)
Being a former assassin, Rolo's instincts are usually spot-on. However, he's also very emotionally vulnerable, so a correct interpretation of a situation can immediately be tainted by his powerful emotional response. As such, Rolo sometimes has a hard time thinking clearly and can be caught unawares in many situations. He is soft-spoken and meek most of the time, but as your typical yandere, he can become explosively emotional at a moment's notice.
Rolo seems to have some kind of weakness for junk food. He's seen repeatedly eating or cooking cakes or other sweet things and drinks a lot of soda. Perhaps all that sugar contributes to his jittery behavior?
Because I find using random Japanese phrases in an entirely English script to be odd and cumbersome unless the word HAS no English translation, I opt out of having Rolo call Lelouch 'nii-san'. He simply refers to Lelouch by his name -- that's usually in the context of a strategic thought kept to himself -- or as 'my brother' when speaking to other people. If he refers to Lelouch as 'my brother' in his thoughts, it usually means he's having a yandere moment or he's not thinking on an intentional level. Rolo is somewhat self-conscious about Lelouch and his 'role' as Lelouch's brother, so even though he desperately wants to be recognized as Lelouch's brother, he often tries to be 'diplomatic' about it -- especially in his own mind. It could be said that he experiences a sense of guilt about referring to himself as Lelouch's brother, but perhaps if enough people acknowledge it as normal, he will be able to let go of that guilt.
Yes, Rolo is a yandere. Yes, that is an example of a Japanese word with no fitting English translation. For the most part it means he's capable of remaining amicable most of the time, but can be sent into silent, brooding fits at very little provocation. If he does this, don't worry, it doesn't always mean he hates you or wishes you harm. He's just a bit bipolar. If he tries to harm you in some way, that's a sign he might not like you.
Rolo exhibits some slightly 'germaphobic' tendencies from time to time. His room is fastidiously maintained and almost completely bare of decoration for this reason. His appearance is always bordering on the pristine. Cleanliness is next to Lulu-ness, after all.
Rolo doesn't seem to remember how old he is, since it was never important to his mission. His birthday might not be, in fact, his own birthday. The reason October 25th is listed is due to the fact that this is Nunnally's birthday and it was on this date that Rolo celebrated his birth for the first time. One location lists his age as 16, while another says that it is between 14 and 16. For the purposes of this game, I'm assuming Rolo's birthdate is October 25th, 2002 atb and that he celebrated his birthday with Lelouch on October 25th, 2018 atb. Thus, he would be 16 at this point.
According to surveillance information provided in the series, Rolo is right-handed, but it's noted that he sometimes uses weapons in his left hand. For the purposes of this game, Rolo is right-handed with tendencies toward ambidexterity.
What's the deal with Rolo's speech patterns? Rolo arrived on the island and for some time seemed to adopt a somewhat formal, but still reasonable, dialect. He used contractions, spoke more fluidly, and was capable of expressing positive, if not sincere, emotions. As time went on, his speech seemed to change. He no longer uses contractions, his speech is much more robotic, and he seems to be less expressive when it comes to normal positive stimuli (meaning the sort of thing that he'd expect people would want him to be happy about, not actual happiness). This is an effort on the part of the player to allude to Rolo's furthering emotional and physical distance from the person who grounds him. Should Lelouch appear on the island, you will most likely see a return of Rolo's more casual speech.
Game canon (stuff that has happened in the game)
| Event |
Description |
| Arrival |
Rolo arrives on the island and, after ascertaining where he is, decides to map out the island itself. For security purposes, of course. He also meets C.C. again and has encounters with Sakura (Kinomoto) and Hakuren. (This log is linked below.) |
| 1st pop quiz |
Rolo takes his first pop quiz and achieves a high score. |
| Game time! |
Rolo participates in a group gaming session with other members of his dorm. He talks with Yuugi awhile and ends up revealing another piece of information about himself and his world. Then he wanders off a bit, only to return when group charades begins. (This log is linked below.) |
| Halloween |
Rolo is introduced to a holiday on the island. He wakes up to find that the island has chosen a 'costume' for him (he's a mobster, complete with fedora, pinstripe suit, and sparkling white spats). Further investigation leads him to the Mech building, where he meets Tsuzuki. |
| 2nd pop quiz |
Rolo takes his second pop quiz and achieves a high score. Almost perfect! |
| Snowstorm |
Rolo takes a nap in the snow. This was inspired by a conversation with Labrador, which occurred earlier. It also results in chastisement by the same. (This log is linked below.) |
| Consequences |
Rolo catches a cold due to his nap and misses one day of class. |
| New roommate |
Rolo's old roommate leaves the island and his new roommate arrives. It's a canonmate, but nobody that Rolo likes. Prince Schneizel's aide, Kanon Maldini, moves into the room with Rolo. Rolo proceeds to do his best to avoid the other like the plague. |
| Truth Virus |
For a whole week, Rolo is unable to lie. He reveals some things to multiple people -- especially to Labrador, which doesn't bother him as much as his conversations with C.C. The witch manages to not let on that Rolo has died, nor does she do more than make Rolo suspicious of Lelouch's final plans. |

C.C. - A familiar face, but not one Rolo is necessarily pleased to see. Rolo considers C.C. exactly that which she says that she herself is: a witch, and Lelouch's partner in crime. Rolo is extremely wary of her, perhaps to the point where he is afraid of her. Or, at least, he's afraid of making her mad. (••)
Hakuren - Rolo is suspicious of Hakuren, if only because Hakuren managed to startle him. Rolo hates to be startled. Truthfully, of all the people he's met so far, Hakuren is one of the people with whom he feels most comfortable. He appreciates the other's ability to avoid asking obvious and potentially unpleasant questions. (*)
Yuugi - Upon learning that Yuugi is from an alternate version of Japan, Rolo is instantly intrigued. Rolo is slowly but surely opening up a little, so he's less worried about Yuugi letting anyone know his secrets. He's still doing his best to stick close though. (**)
Linali - They've only spoken briefly, but Rolo finds her pleasant. He seems to be a bit shy around her though. Rolo and Linali are in a lab group for Chemistry. When Rolo gets sick, Linali offers to help, which probably only increased his shyness. (*)
Rebecca Hawkins - Rolo's yet to meet her, but they're in a lab group together for Chemistry class. (*)
Labrador - Rolo has since shared a great many things with Lab, including the power of his Geass. Why he feels safe doing this is still a mystery to him. Rolo is currently planning to make Labrador a gift of some sort to say 'thank you' for his kindness and patience. (***)
Castor - Rolo and Castor only spoke once, but Rolo knows a fair amount about him because he and Labrador talk about Castor on a semi-regular basis. They are discussing forming a new class. (*)
Tsuzuki - Rolo meets him during Halloween. He thinks Tsuzuki is possibly insane, but he also feels like they have a certain kindredness. He's wary, as usual. (*)
Mikuru - He's not at all sure what to think of her, but he was assigned her temporary bodyguard and he'll do his best in that position! (*)
Kanon - Rolo does NOT like Kanon. And, unfortunately for him, they are roommates. He may, in actual matter of fact, consider Kanon an opponent due to the fact that he is the Prince's 'second in command', so to speak -- whereas Rolo sees himself as Lelouch's 'second in command'. (•••)
Yuuko - Rolo hasn't met her yet either, but he's enormously suspicious of her. (•••)
